Background:
Monkton Junior opened in 1965 in a single-storey brick building set in 'spacious' grounds. Facilties include eight classrooms, a library and four multi-purpose work areas which can be used for large group computer work. The grounds are currently being developed in a project which has already seen the addition of a perimeter fence. Monkton has a 'successful sporting tradition', providing after school football, netball and basketball and participating in local competitions. Children may also join the internet club, choir, instrumental group and reporters' club. Year 6 pupils take an annual residential course which covers subjects ranging from geography, history and science to 'character building outdoor pursuits'. The school nurtures its links with the community, businesses and charities through an 'exhaustive' programme of local, national and world wide events.
