Background:
The school is an amalgamation of the infants' school, founded in 1928, and the junior school, dating from the 1950s. A #1m refurbishment programme from the council 'will ensure that our traditions are safe for the next century'. The large school serves a 'settled' community to the West of North Shields where there is 'some considerable social deprivation'. Facilities on the 'extensive' grounds include four halls and a swimming pool. Academic standards are seen to be rising, and this improvement is facilitated by a homework club and 14 other extra-curricular activities, including recorder and guitar lessons. There is an emphasis on education as a multi-cultural experience. An initiative is underway to create a new community campus for activities in and out of school, in conjunction with the local church. The school prides itself on its sporting achievements and in 1999 it won all three local netball competitions.
