Background:
Still occupying its original Edwardian building, the small school recently celebrated its 90th birthday. The 'rather harsh' playgrounds have been improved by the addition of planting areas, a new wall and railings. There is no playing field, but those of other local schools are used for sports. The school is situated in the inner-city area of Bensham, a densely populated area with an above average level of unemployment. It is over-subscribed in some year groups. The curriculum is taught within a 'loving and caring' atmosphere. Older pupils have swimming lessons and can learn the guitar, and there are after school clubs in dance and netball. The school enjoys the benefits of being 'very much part' of the local parish community, such as working with local artists and making use of video conferencing links with the local secondary school. Parents are 'always very welcome' in the school.
