Background:
The school opened in 1963 and serves the needs of Bede ward and the neighbouring area of Jarrow. The area is 'socially disadvantaged', the unemployment rate is high and 53 pupils have been identified as having special education needs. The school is currently housed in a single-storey building comprising six classrooms, a multi-purpose room, 'well-stocked' library, and 'large' school hall. Outdoor facilities include a large playing field, nature garden and vegetable patch. A 'full range' of extra-curricular activities is offered including netball, kwik-cricket, choir and tag rugby. The school 'works closely' with the community and 'strives to develop educational business partnerships'. One recent project has involved the children working with the Port of Tyne company to design a six-metre-high sculpture. The school also works with the Princess Trust Volunteers on various community and school based projects. Dunn Street has an 'active' fund raising group which supports a range of charities. 'At Dunn Street Primary School we aim to offer children a broad and balanced curriculum, developing a progression of skills from when they first come to us in the nursery at three years, to when they leave for secondary school at 11 years'.
