Background:

The school building dates back to 1908 when a secondary school used the site. John F Kennedy Primary opened in 1975. In 1995, it moved to a nearby site where another primary school had closed. Adaptations were made to accommodate the transferring pupils including a new hall, library, staff room and administration block. Facilities include two hard-surfaced playgrounds, 'extensive' playing fields and a garden area, and there are good links with parents and the local community. Parents help on a voluntary basis, from classroom support to fundraising activities. Children have the opportunity to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities including football, netball, basketball, multi-skills, fitness, healthy body club, choir, and cross-country. Homework clubs are available for Years 5 and 6. A school council meets weekly and includes members from each year group nominated by their peers. The council discusses school related issues. Children have the opportunity to go on a range of visits related to the curriculum including residential visits to an outdoor education centre and, in 1999, to France. Theatre trips are arranged in and out of school time.
