Background:
Opened in 1970 as a purpose-bui1t Catholic comprehensive school serving the developing new town of Washington and nearby towns or villages, the school is set in 'spacious parkland' to the south of the town. Building problems, which have caused only 'minimal disruption', have resulted in architects being commissioned to design a new school. It is over-subscribed, with 1.6 applications for each place. The school offers open-access A-level and AS-level courses and is a technology school, with more than #200,000 in awards. It is 'noted for its sporting success' in football, hockey and athletics. 'As a Catholic school, our philosophy and ethos are firmly based in the values of the Gospel. We are very proud of the caring atmosphere in the school and the high quality of relationships between everyone in the school community'.
