Background:
Blackfell Primary was originally built in the form of separate infant and junior schools in 1973, with the new primary school being created in 1993. It serves the village of Blackfell, part of Washington, a new town that was created in the early 1970s. In 1995 large parts of the school's catchment area of local authority housing were subject to demolition and redevelopment, and the school roll dropped from over 400 to under 200 when 550 houses were demolished. New housing development has resulted in an increase in pupil numbers over the past few months. The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities including football, cricket, gymnastics, drama, line dancing and outdoor activities such as fell walking. The school is developing homework and study clubs and the Friends of Blackfell Primary School involves parents and others in 'working for the benefit of pupils in school'. The school was one of the first schools in the country to be awarded the Quality Mark for primary schools. A new community room was opened in 1999.
