Background:

West Gate Community College is an 11-18 comprehensive school situated in the West End of the City of Newcastle serving the population living to the north of the river Tyne. The college is located in a large, well-maintained site where pupils are taught in two main buildings. Over the years, many environmental developments have taken place in response to the changing needs of schools. The school's accommodation includes subject specialist teaching rooms, two large drama studios, suite of music studios, specialist laboratories, suite of specialist ICT rooms, a library/resource centre and a pupil support base. It also has a recently built sports facility. A state-of-the-art computing facility is located on the West Gate site and provides first class ICT opportunities for pupils and adults from the local community. Extra-curricular activities are an extension to what is formally taught during the college day. These activities include sport, drama and music, computing, art, graphics and textiles, Duke of Edinburgh Award and various trips. Pupils in all year groups regularly raise funds for deserving charities. The college seeks to create a happy, stimulating and caring setting to promote an understanding of society and to develop those values which enable the individual to take a responsible part within it.
