Background:

Marine Park was originally built as an infant school in 1976 and the junior section and nursery were added at later dates. Marine Park is located on a council estate in an area of 'great social deprivation' and pupils are also admitted from a bed and breakfast, and from a women's refuge. These children often have emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. Almost 30% of pupils are from ethnic minority backgrounds. Despite these potential difficulties, the school is proud to report rising standards in its SAT results. It is also proud of its links with the community, which include a family literacy scheme, and children's artwork has been on display in an art gallery. Sporting achievements include winning the Durham Kwik Cricket Festival Tournament in 1999. A house system exists in the school for the promotion of sporting activities and to encourage good behaviour. The school recently received a 'large' sum of money to improve the environment for its pupils and it is working with a local artist to create a garden in the nursery's covered play area.
