Background:

St Anthony's is an 11-18 voluntary aided girls' comprehensive school serving the Roman Catholic community within the City of Sunderland. The school was founded by the Sisters of Mercy during the 19th century and has a fundamental commitment to high quality girls' education in a Christian environment. In 2004 the school celebrated it's centenary as a secondary school with sixth form. Currently thirty three subjects are offered at advanced level. The school is situated in the centre of Sunderland within walking distance of train, metro and bus stations. It has a garden site consisting of three Victorian villas and a series of more modern buildings. The school'sets high academic standards and has a strong commitment to the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum. Twenty seven subjects are offered at GCSE and thirty three at Advanced level.Pupils also enjoy a wide range of extra-curricular activities and perform in many sports at national and international level. There are very high participation rates in sporting and other extended curricular activities. Over £15,000 is raised annually for local, regional and international charities. The school is currently sponsoring the Manzini Youth Care project in Swaziland run by the Salesian Fathers as well as a Sisters of Mercy project in the Sudan.In September 1999 the school became a designated City Technology College. In 2003 Technology College status was renewed for another three years. In September 2000 the school became a Beacon School and this has also recently been renewed. The school has also been awarded a DfES Excellence Award in 2001, 2002 and 2003.The school has partnerships with the Universities of Durham, Northumbria and Sunderland for Initial Teacher Training, Northumbria University for SCITT and the GTP programme. The school is a TTA Open School for visits from those wishing to enter teacher training. There is a commitment to continuing professional development at all stages of an individual's career.It is also a member of the Durham and Darlington RC Partnership (South) and consequently has links with a wide network of RC schools in the region. It is also a member of Excellence in Cities Partnership within the city of Sunderland. The school aims to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum. Wishes to enhance and develop the lives of pupils in a truly Christian atmosphere; in full co-operation with parents, to help build character, a healthy sense of moral values and an abiding awareness both of personal worth and of the needs of others.
