Background:

The school opened in 1968, and is accommodated in a recently extended two storey building and mobile classrooms. It is set in 'extensive' grounds on the edge of the residential seaside town of Whitley Bay. Children have the opportunity to participate in a number of extra-curricular activities including soccer, netball, choir, recorder and art, and violin and woodwind tuition can be arranged through the school. The school has been 'particularly successful' in local soccer and netball leagues. Children support charities such as CAFOD and St Cuthbert's Care. There is a parents' committee, the School Association, which 'enthusiastically promotes the school'. An out of school club runs from 8am to 8.55am and from 3.30pm to 6pm at a charge. The school recently received Healthy School and Tidy School awards, an excellence award from the DFeS for consistent achievement, and the Investors in People standard. 'Star of the Sea School is dedicated to the education, growth and development of the whole child based upon the partnership of pupils, staff, parents, governors and parishes'.
