Background:

The school was built in 1964 on 'attractive' grounds in a predominantly private estate. In addition to the National Curriculum, the school is proud of its sporting activities. Its athletics team won the 'majority' of local competitions it entered in 1999, while the mixed hockey team has remained unbeaten in five years and reached the northern finals in 1998. Pupils can participate in dance classes or in the ski club at the local dry slope. Years 6 and 7 enjoy residential visits to Sunderland's outdoor centre in Keswick in the Lake District. The oldest pupils perform an annual musical at the local church and Spanish is taught as part of the curriculum. The School Council 'encourages independence and responsibility' and pupils are encouraged to broaden their perspectives with a number of charitable activities. East Herrington recently raised funds to have electricity connected to its partner school in Zimbabwe and is currently working towards buying them a word processor. Children of similar ages in each school correspond regularly. The 'thriving' Friends of the School association raises funds for the school through social events such as fairs and discos. The school is oversubscribed with additional classes in three year groups.
