Background:

Founded in 1836 but present building is 30 years old. Set on hill overlooking small village of Rowlands Gill, seven miles from Newcastle. School site extensive because it is a former secondary school. Facilities include a swimming pool, gymnasium, two playgrounds, one playing field, hall and stage accommodating an audience of 400 people, library and computer suite. There is also a moderate learning difficulty unit on site. Awarded Beacon status in 1999 to spread good practice to other schools; partnerships with other schools and colleges now exist as a result. Wide-range of extra curricular activities include sword dancing, netball, football, choir and French. School choir has participated in several fund-raising events for charities including Coping with Cancer and the NSPCC. Received the Healthy School Award for three years running. Participation in many sporting events including dance festivals, swimming galas, football and hockey leagues. 'Thriving' parent-teacher association organises basketball, gymnastics and swimming clubs in the evenings. The school is also planning to develop community education.
