Background:
St Aidan's was established as a grammar school in 1948 by the congregation of Christian Brothers and entered the voluntary aided sector during the reorganisation of Roman Catholic secondary education Sunderland in 1972. Another reorganisation in the mid 1980's widened the school's catchment area to the whole of Sunderland. It is an 11 to 18 Roman Catholic comprehensive school for boys. The school is situated in the south of the city and about a mile from the centre. Pupils are given extensive opportunities for visits outside the normal curriculum. Activities include music concerts, theatre workshops, geography and history field trips, theatre visits and excursions to cultural centres in this country and abroad. The school has a long and successful sporting tradition. The school'sports field known as 'The Limes' is five minutes walking distance from the school and consists of a pavilion, one soccer pitch, one rugby pitch and space for athletics track and field events. There is a large sports hall on the main school site. It has a wide range of clubs such as brass band, keyboard club, guitar group, drama club, computer club, environment protection club, electronics club, robotic engineering club, art club and chess club. This school has achieved the following awards: DfES Achievement award, Specialist Schools Trust, Sport England Activemark. The school aims to create an atmosphere of Christian care and concern in which the pupil can mature and develop and a healthy self image.
