Background:
St Joseph's RC was founded in 1929 in Washington village. The adminstrastion area, hall and infant classrooms were built in 1977 and the 'pleasant' grounds include a football pitch. The school organises a number of out of school activities including clubs for music, art, ICT, football, netball and cricket. Its 'strong tradition of sporting success' is particularly notable in netball and football. The school raises money for charity, maintains 'strong' relations with the parish and local nursing homes and is linked with a school for disabled children in Zambia. Residential visits are used to enhance classroom learning and have recently included a Roman fort, the Wildfowl Park, Washington Old Hall, Hall Hill Farm, Beamish and 'regular' trips to the Washington library. The Friends of St Joseph's meet weekly and organise fundraising events such as discos, coffee mornings, raffles, cake sales and a fashion show. Their efforts have provided the school with netball posts and bibs, plants for the school garden, a compact disc player, television and video.
