Background:
Serving the Roman Catholic community of St Leonard's Parish, Silksworth, in the south of Sunderland, the school was established in 1874 and then re-sited and re-established as a primary school in 1973. The grounds include 'extensive and attractive' playing fields. Field study and outdoor activity weeks are arranged for older pupils each year. Staff emphasise 'the Christian way of life' and make celebrating achievement an 'integral' part of the school day. A 'wide range' of extra-curricular activities is offered, including tuition in musical instruments as well as sports, dance and computing. Pupils support a variety of charities, with an emphasise on Third World organisations. 'Children are offered a wide range of experiences which enhance the appreciation of the community in which they live'.
