Background:
The school is housed in a single-storey brick building dating from 1950, situated half a mile from the sea. It serves an area comprising a large council estate to the south and private housing to the north, and the infant schools serving these areas are feeder schools for Cheviot Junior. Facilities include a purpose-built dining hall, separate hall with stage equipped for dramatic productions, library and computer suite. The school also offers large playing fields and an excellent swimming pool. It shares a site with Bamburgh School which caters for children with physical disabilities and there are excellent links between the two schools. All areas of the National Curriculum are taught, in addition to which a varied programme of extra-curricular activities includes short tennis, football, netball, music, drama and country dancing. Children have taken part in football coaching run by Sunderland Athletic Football Club and the school is involved with the Cliff Richard Tennis Foundation and the Scoring Goals for Success scheme run by Newcastle United Football Club. Visits from touring theatre groups and well-known authors widen the children's experience. Children have the opportunity of a residential experience at Thurston Outdoor Education Centre in the Lake District. Educational visits are organised to places such as the Discovery Museum in Newcastle and Thornley Woods in Gateshead, and the school was invited to attend the official opening of South Shields Magistrates Court by the Queen. The school enjoys 'considerable' parental support and promotes links with industry, having been involved with the South Tyneside Education Busienss Partnership on energy conservation and consumer awareness projects. Pupils were involved in the Toyota Science/Technology Challenge and have visited industrial sites. 'The main aim of the school is to help each child to develop his or her talents as widely as possible to reach their full potential'.
