Background:

Thornhill School was opened on 5th September 1966, on farmland, which belonged to the Thornhill Estate. The school is a ten-form entry, 11-16 co-educational comprehensive situated in a leafy suburb close to the city centre. It is housed in well-equipped buildings. It has an excellent variety of sports facilities. These include two gymnasia, a 25 metre heated swimming pool, 12 tennis and netball courts, an all-weather track and a large playing field. The school has an impressive tradition of music and dramatic productions. There are a wide range of extra-curricular musical activities, including an orchestra, wind band, recorder, ensemble, keyboard club and various choirs. The school also offers a variety of other clubs and activities that take place lunchtime and after-school. Many trips and visits are arranged including those of a recreational nature such as winter skiing trips, outdoor pursuits and visits to France and Germany. The school holds the prestigious Sportsmark award for pupil participation in sport. The school gives regular support to a wide variety of local charities. The school aims to create the atmosphere, embodied through the spirit of enterprise, in which young people may learn to live happily together.
