Background:

Opened 25 years ago to serve the Catholic children of St John Vianney parish, the school is situated in the outer west end of Newcastle and draws pupils from a range of backgrounds. It is housed in a a modern semi-open plan single storey building with a flat roof, shaped like a horseshoe with the hall situated between the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 classrooms. The school'sits in 'generous grounds' made up of a sports field, large nature area with shrubs and trees, a bog area, pond and 'look under area' (carpets and stones to lift when searching for mini-beasts). A walled millennium garden has also been constructed. The school has a 'strong core curriculum' and is proud of its 'consistent success in the SAT league tables'. It has a 'very capable' choir who have performed at a range of venues including Newcastle and Durham Cathedrals, as well as on local TV. The school's own nativity featured on national television on Gaby Roslin's 'Real Nativity Show' on Channel Four in 1998. Outside agencies, such as the Newcastle United Development Team, are used to promote football after school, and the Newcastle Eagles support school basketball. The school is proud of 'good parish links' and takes part in church celebrations. It also has a 'strong' PTA. The school'supports a number of charities throughout the year, both locally and nationally. Activity 'outward bound' type weekends at Kielder Forest/Lake area of Northumberland are organised. There is also a three day field study on Holy Island, where pupils study the flora and fauna of the area as well as learning about the development of Christianity in the North East. In 1998, the school was also proud to win the 'Healthy School Award'.
